The Speed Trap: When Faster Projects Derail Better Outcomes
In today’s fast-paced, deadline-driven work culture, speed is often seen as the ultimate virtue. We celebrate fast launches, quick turnarounds, and rapid iterations — but rarely stop to ask: At what cost?
This session challenges the deeply ingrained assumption that faster is always better. Drawing inspiration from both physics and real-world project case studies, we’ll explore the idea that time isn’t fixed — it’s relative. And when it comes to creative, strategic, or collaborative work, not all time is equally valuable.
The pressure to move fast can feel non-negotiable. But rushing can often compromise insight, increase rework, lower quality, and erode team morale. In contrast, well-paced projects allow space for deeper thinking, better alignment, and more sustainable outcomes.
We’ll unpack why the “quality-cost-schedule” triangle often overemphasizes schedule without enough scrutiny — and how to shift that narrative in your organization. You’ll gain a new lens for evaluating project timelines, along with frameworks for deciding when to slow down (and when to accelerate with purpose).
This presentation will cover:
- Why speed has become a default value — and why that needs to be reexamined.
- The hidden costs of rushing: rework, burnout, and missed insight.
- How time is perceived differently depending on purpose, context, and mindset.
- Case studies where fast delivery backfired — and where slower pacing led to breakthroughs.
- How to reframe speed as a tool, not a goal.
- Practical strategies to align teams around thoughtful pacing, not arbitrary urgency.
Whether you’re a project manager, designer, strategist, or team lead, this session will help you approach time more intentionally — not to slow down for the sake of it, but to move at the right speed for the work that matters.
