How to Decide

I picked up this book as I was looking for some material to include or introduce to my PM students around making better decisions and I can tell you that I do not regret it.

How to Decide (Simple tools for making better choices)

“The only thing you have control over that can influence the way your life turns out is the quality of your decisions”. This is the first bit of knowledge that you get right from the introduction.

This book by Annie Duke comes highly recommended for anyone who needs to make regular decisions… which is basically EVERYONE. That said do you believe that you make good decisions? That is another matter altogether.

If you recognize the name, you might, as Annie used to be a former professional poker player having won more than $4Million in tournaments money before retiring in 2012.

I must admit that the risk side of my brain helped me picked this one up. I love the format which includes a bunch of tools and discussion around the decision process and how humans go about nailing it or not getting it at all. I mostly like that it is easy to read, take in and full of exercises that you could do with your Team as I do with my students. These exercises also help you to get better insight into the way that you yourself look at the decision-making process and I can tell you that you might learn a thing or two to improve in the process.

This is not a novel and not meant to be read from cover to cover but that said I did without an issue and learned a lot that I could apply in my work setting on a daily basis.

If you liked this book, I would suggest following it by another one of Annie’s titled: “Thinking in Bets: Making smarter decisions when you don’t have all the facts”. This one relates totally to risk management if you are interested in the topic.
