This month, we shine a light on Komal Mistry, PMP®.
Title & Organization: R&D Project Manager, Teladoc Health Canada
Years in Project Management: 10+
PMI Membership Level / Certifications: PMP®
Current Focus / Specialty Area: Strategic Technical Transformation Project Management
Tell us a little about who you are, your current role, and what drew you to project management.
I am a Program and Project Manager with over a decade of experience leading complex, cross-functional initiatives across technology and highly regulated industries. Currently, I am an R&D Project Manager at Teladoc Health, where I focus on the intersection of healthcare and technology to drive innovative product development.
My background as a pharmaceutical engineering consultant originally drew me to project management. While I value technical precision, I realized my true passion lies in the 'big picture': bridging the gap between R&D, engineering, business development, and operations to turn early-stage concepts into successful, consumer-ready solutions. I love the challenge of navigating the rigorous requirements of regulated markets while maintaining the speed and agility needed for modern tech delivery.
What’s one lesson you wish you had learned earlier in your PM career?
I wish I had embraced the value of 'navigating ambiguity' as a core competency sooner. In the early stages of my career, I leaned heavily on rigid structures, but I’ve learned that the most successful programs, especially those involving complex technical shifts, require a balance of structure with the flexibility to pivot when scope or priorities change. Keeping a team aligned and solution-oriented during these shifts is what ultimately drives results.
How has PMI membership influenced your professional growth?
PMI membership has provided me with a standardized, global framework that has been essential as I’ve transitioned between different industries, from pharmaceuticals to retail to health tech. Beyond the certifications, my role as a Professional Development Coordinator for the PMI-DHC chapter has been incredibly rewarding. It has allowed me to connect with a vibrant community of peers and has provided a unique platform to be exposed to and learn directly from seasoned thought leaders and industry veterans. These interactions have been vital in helping me stay at the forefront of evolving methodologies, such as Agile and hybrid delivery, while also exploring the critical intersection of AI in project management and the growing importance of mental health and well-being within high-performing teams.
What’s your favourite way to unwind after a long project week?
After a week of managing diverse workstreams and high-visibility milestones, I find that physical activity is my best reset. Whether it’s a heavy strength training session or a long walk through the city, getting active helps clear the 'mental tabs' I’ve kept open all week. I also love trying out new recipes; it’s a great way to activate a different creative outlet in my brain and allows me to step back from the details so I can return on Monday with a fresh, strategic perspective.
